Date: February 2010

Description: Labs at UNC consume over half of the university’s total energy.  One very easy way to save energy in labs is to simply shut fume hoods when they are not in use.  An open fume hood uses up to as much energy as 3 homes. Rather than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on new technology, the “Shut the Sash” campaign can help reduce energy consumption in labs by reminding lab users to close the fume hoods when they are done using them.

Allocation amount: $550

Benefits to students and UNC:

  • Education
  • Behavioral change in energy consumption
