2010 Shut the Sash magnets

Date: February 2010

Description: Labs at UNC consume over half of the University’s total energy.  Labs can easily save energy by shutting fume hoods when they are not in use. An open fume hood uses up to as much energy as 3 homes. Rather than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on new technology, the “Shut the Sash” campaign reduces energy consumption in labs by reminding lab users to close the fume hoods with magnets and fliers.

Allocation amount: $512.20

Benefits to students and UNC:

  • Education
  • Behavioral change in energy consumption
