Description: RESPC allocated money to assist Morrison Residence Hall in the EPA’s first Building Competition, in which the building with the most energy savings won. Energy reductions came from improved heating and cooling systems, optimization of the solar panels, lighting adjustments, publicizing of energy conservation to students, and more. Morrison Hall won the competition, with a savings of $250,000 in energy.

Allocation amount: $30,000

Benefits to students and UNC:  The EPA Building Competition project served as a great educational tool for the university. It exposed faculty and students to the benefits of conserving energy by making simple adjustments such as heating and cooling improvements and better utilization of the solar panels. Energy savings were 36 percent, and the payback period was on the order of months.
