2010 EPA National Building Contest

Description: RESPC funded Morrison Residence Hall’s participation in the EPA’s first Building Competition, in which buildings competed for the highest energy savings. Morrison reduced energy consumption by improving heating and cooling systems, optimizing solar panels, adjusting lighting, and publicizing energy conservation behaviors. Morrison Hall won the competition by saving $250,000 in energy.

Allocation amount: $22,666.58

Benefits to students and UNC:  The EPA Building Competition project served as a great educational tool for the university. It exposed faculty and students to the benefits of conserving energy by making simple adjustments such as heating and cooling improvements and better utilization of the solar panels. Energy savings were 36 percent, and the payback period was on the order of months.
